Beltangady: A KSRTC bus driver and conductor showed quick thinking and compassion after a woman passenger suddenly fell unconscious during a journey from Davanagere to Mangaluru, rushing the bus directly to a nearby hospital in Beltangady taluk on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at around 4 pm on October 6 when the woman, travelling on the KSRTC bus, suddenly fainted and became unable to speak or move. Fellow passengers immediately alerted the driver and conductor, who acted promptly to get her medical attention.
As the bus approached Kakkinje in Beltangady taluk, driver Kiran and conductor Santhosh Sangappa Gowda diverted the vehicle to Sri Krishna Hospital in the area. The woman was admitted for treatment without delay.
Passenger suddenly falls unconscious
The bus was travelling from Davanagere towards Mangaluru when the medical emergency occurred.
According to the report, the woman passenger suddenly lost consciousness while the bus was on its journey. She was reportedly unable to speak or move, prompting concern among the passengers travelling with her.
Co-passengers immediately informed the bus crew about her condition. Recognising that the situation required urgent medical attention, the driver and conductor decided to take the bus to the nearest suitable hospital rather than continue towards Mangaluru.
Their decision enabled the passenger to receive medical care quickly.
Driver diverts bus to hospital
When the bus reached the Kakkinje area of Beltangady taluk, driver Kiran and conductor Santhosh Sangappa Gowda took the vehicle directly to Sri Krishna Hospital.
The crew ensured that the woman was taken inside the hospital and admitted for treatment. Their quick response helped avoid further delay during what was potentially a serious medical emergency.
Rather than treating the incident as a routine passenger matter, the bus staff responded immediately after learning that the woman had lost consciousness.
The incident has highlighted the importance of prompt action by public transport staff when passengers experience medical emergencies during journeys.
Passenger identified as Annapurna
The woman was later identified as Annapurna, a resident of Balehonnur.
Doctors at Sri Krishna Hospital in Kakkinje examined her and confirmed that she was responding to treatment and was on the path to recovery.
The timely intervention by the bus crew and assistance from people in the area helped ensure that Annapurna received medical attention soon after she became unwell.
Locals also step in to help
Local residents also joined efforts to assist the woman after the bus reached the hospital.
Ashraf Charmadi, Farooq Kakkinje and Noufal Kakkinje were among those who reportedly extended assistance during the emergency.
Their support, along with the efforts of the KSRTC driver and conductor, helped the passenger receive the required medical care.
Such collective action can be particularly important when a person suddenly falls ill in a public place or while travelling, as immediate assistance can help in getting the person to medical care without unnecessary delay.
Swift response earns appreciation
The response of the KSRTC crew has drawn attention because the driver chose to divert the bus to a hospital as soon as the seriousness of the passenger’s condition became apparent.
Public transport buses carry passengers over long distances, and medical emergencies can occur unexpectedly during such journeys. In such situations, the actions of drivers, conductors and fellow passengers can make a significant difference in ensuring that medical assistance is not delayed.
In this case, the bus was diverted near Kakkinje, allowing Annapurna to be admitted to Sri Krishna Hospital.
Woman recovering after treatment
Doctors have confirmed that Annapurna is responding to treatment and recovering.
The incident, which could have become more serious had medical assistance been delayed, ended on a positive note following the prompt intervention of the bus crew and local residents.
The actions of driver Kiran, conductor Santhosh Sangappa Gowda and the locals who assisted the passenger demonstrate the importance of remaining alert and responding quickly when someone falls ill during a journey.
For Annapurna and her family, the timely decision to take her to hospital provided crucial assistance during an unexpected medical emergency.
