The Commission for Women, Diocese of Mangalore, hosted a special Women’s Day celebration on Sunday under the theme ‘Supporting a Mission of Empowerment’. This year’s event was also a significant part of the Jubilee of Women in the Year of Hope, highlighting the immense contributions of women to the church, society, and family life.

Most Rev. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, presided over the event, with Janet Barboza Mudarangady, the Resource Mobilising Officer of Maanini Women’s State Level Federation, serving as the chief guest. The celebration provided a platform to acknowledge the vital role women play in both the church and the community, while also launching initiatives aimed at uplifting and empowering women across the diocese.

Bishop Saldanha reaffirmed the church’s commitment to gender equality and emphasized that true empowerment for women is rooted in faith, resilience, and collective action. He stated, “The dignity of women is deeply rooted in our faith. Empowerment is not about competing with men, but ensuring women are given the space to flourish in all areas of life.”

Janet Barboza Mudarangady shared her inspiring journey from parish-level leadership to state-wide influence. Reflecting on her early struggles, she attributed her success to the support she received from faith-based communities. “The women’s association of my parish gave me my voice, my confidence, and my purpose,” she said, urging women to step into leadership roles and support one another. “Change happens when we lift each other.”

During the celebration, Bishop Saldanha launched ‘Matronnati Nidhi’, a financial aid initiative to support 29 underprivileged women, including widows and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. A 13-member resource team was also introduced to mentor and guide women on their empowerment journey.
