Mangaluru: A dedicated Yakshagana team has been launched in the Netherlands, marking a significant milestone in the promotion of the traditional coastal Karnataka art form in Europe. The team was formally introduced during ‘Yaksha Natya Vaibhava’, organised by Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation Europe in association with Shrigandha Holland Kannada Balaga Eindhoven and Shankara Dans Akademie at the Kerkplein Theatre in Son en Breugel.
The cultural programme attracted a houseful audience of more than 200 art enthusiasts, reflecting the growing interest in Yakshagana among the Indian diaspora and international audiences.
Year-long training culminates in debut performance
Speaking on the occasion, Yakshagana Guru Ajeeth Prabhu said the initiative was the result of a year of dedicated training and cultural collaboration.
He said that last year, Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation Europe, in association with Shrigandha Holland Kannada Balaga Eindhoven, had launched Yakshagana training classes under his guidance.
According to him, the trainees displayed exceptional commitment and passion throughout the year. Seven artistes from the Netherlands and three from Germany underwent regular training, progressing from enthusiastic learners to confident performers capable of presenting a full-fledged Yakshagana performance.
Their debut presentation was the Badagu Tittu Yakshagana prasanga ‘Vidhi – Chandrahasa Charitre’, which received an enthusiastic response from the audience.
Cultural programme begins with traditional performances
The programme was inaugurated by representatives of Utrecht Kannada Sangha, Shrigandha Holland Kannada Balaga, and Shankara Dans Akademie.
The evening commenced with a Bharatanatyam recital by students of Shankara Dans Akademie, setting the stage for the traditional performances that followed.
The Yakshagana segment opened with the customary Poorvaranga, featuring an elegant Balagopala dance by young artistes Shriansh Bhat and Shriya Bhat from Düsseldorf, Germany.
Their performance was followed by Peetike Stree Vesha, presented by Pradyumna Prabhu and Shreemayi Devji, recreating the authentic ambience of a traditional Yakshagana performance before the main prasanga.
‘Vidhi – Chandrahasa Charitre’ captivates audience
The highlight of the evening was the nearly two-hour presentation of ‘Vidhi – Chandrahasa Charitre’, which held the audience spellbound with its colourful costumes, expressive acting, rhythmic dance and engaging storytelling.
The production showcased the essence of the Badagu Tittu style of Yakshagana while making the performance accessible to audiences in Europe through professionally recorded background music that retained the traditional flavour of the art form.
The cast featured Usha Adiga, Chaithra Reetesh, Reetesh Handly, Veeksha Handly, Spoorthi Sreenivas, Niveditha Patil, Nandhan Bangalore, along with Yakshagana Guru Ajeeth Prabhu, who also performed in the production.
Milestone for Yakshagana in Europe
Organisers described the launch of the dedicated Yakshagana team as an important step in preserving and promoting Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage beyond India.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Yakshagana’s presence in Europe by encouraging regular training, performances and cultural exchanges among members of the Indian diaspora and local audiences.
With trained artistes now based in the Netherlands and Germany, organisers hope the team will continue staging performances across Europe, introducing more people to one of coastal Karnataka’s most celebrated traditional performing arts.
The successful launch of the Netherlands Yakshagana team demonstrates the growing global appeal of the centuries-old art form and the dedication of cultural organisations working to preserve it for future generations.
