Mangaluru: The Yenepoya Nephrourology Institute at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital has achieved a significant milestone in urological cancer care by successfully performing robotic total intracorporeal orthotopic neobladder reconstruction in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
The advanced procedure involves the complete removal of the cancerous bladder followed by the creation of a new bladder using the patient’s intestine, with the entire surgery performed robotically inside the body.
Advanced robotic procedure performed successfully
The procedure was successfully carried out on a 62-year-old patient, with both the bladder removal and neobladder reconstruction completed entirely through the robotic platform.
According to the hospital, the patient experienced a smooth postoperative recovery. He was able to tolerate a soft oral diet, mobilised well after surgery, and was discharged on the eighth postoperative day with a urinary catheter in place, in accordance with standard postoperative protocol.
The hospital said the procedure offers patients the possibility of maintaining near-normal urinary function while improving their quality of life following bladder cancer treatment.

Multidisciplinary team behind the success
The surgery was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Mujeeburahiman, along with Dr. Altaf Khan, Dr. Nischith D’Souza, and Dr. Rehan Khan.
The nephrology team was headed by Dr. Santhosh Pai, with support from Dr. Aditya and Dr. Preema, while the anaesthesia team was led by Dr. Thippeswamy. Mr. Nelvin Nelson, Deputy Manager and Chief Transplant and Robotic Surgery Coordinator, coordinated the procedure.
