Mangaluru: Yenepoya Pre-University College, Jeppinamogaru, Mangaluru, inaugurated its newly established National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit at the YMCA Hall, Kulashekara, with a focus on encouraging students to embrace social responsibility, environmental consciousness, national integration and a spirit of service.
The inauguration was organised with the objective of helping students develop values beyond academic excellence. The initiative seeks to encourage young people to contribute to society through service, cooperation, environmental protection, preservation of land and water resources, respect for the nation and its language, and community-oriented activities.
Dr Kavitha K. R. inaugurates NSS unit
The programme was presided over by Mr Ujwal Rodney Vinejas, Principal, Yenepoya Pre-University College.
Dr Kavitha K. R., Joint Director, Directorate of Collegiate Education, Mangaluru, was the chief guest and formally inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
Addressing the students, Dr Kavitha emphasised the importance of developing social responsibility alongside academic achievement. She encouraged students to use the NSS platform to cultivate strong values and become responsible individuals capable of contributing to positive social transformation.
She highlighted the role of young people in society and encouraged them to actively participate in initiatives that promote community welfare and social development.
Importance of NSS highlighted
Dr Vineetha, former NSS Coordinator of Mangalore University and former Evaluation Officer of Roshni Nilaya, attended the programme as the guest of honour.
She guided the students on the significance of the National Service Scheme and explained the responsibilities associated with becoming an NSS volunteer. Her interaction focused on encouraging students to understand their role in serving society and contributing constructively to their communities.
The programme also featured an information session on NSS activities by Dr Ashwini Shetty, Director, Extension and Outreach Activities, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University).
As the resource person, Dr Ashwini provided the students with an overview of the various activities and programmes conducted under the National Service Scheme. The session was intended to familiarise the newly enrolled students with the opportunities available through NSS and encourage their active participation.
NSS flag and T-shirts unveiled
An important part of the inauguration was the unveiling of the NSS flag and T-shirts, followed by the administration of the NSS pledge.
The ceremony formally marked the beginning of the new unit’s activities and provided students with an opportunity to commit themselves to the principles of service and social responsibility associated with NSS.
The dignitaries present on the dais included Mr Sinan Zakaria, Academic Advisor of the institution and Director of Yenepoya Advanced Learning, along with Mr Anoop and Ms Akshatha K. Ail, Programme Officers of NSS Units 1 and 2.
The presence of academic and NSS officials added significance to the inauguration and provided students with guidance on the objectives and functioning of the programme.
Students take active part in the programme
The programme also featured active participation from students and staff of Yenepoya Pre-University College.
Rumana Yasmeen, a student of the college, rendered the NSS song as part of the prayer, setting a meaningful tone for the programme.
Mr Anoop, Programme Officer, welcomed the gathering, while Ms Akshatha proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Ms Aparna, Lecturer.
Teaching and non-teaching staff members and students participated actively in the inauguration, making the event a meaningful beginning for the newly established NSS unit.
