A group of 25 youths from Yuva Munnade, the youth forum of the NGO Samvada, is conducting a three-day campaign called ‘Neera Dariya Nade’ to understand the problems faced by the Nethravati River. Starting from BC Road and ending in Ullal, the campaign aims to raise awareness and gather insights about the river’s issues. Yogish Malligemaadu, a mentor at Samvada, stated that the initiative involves youth walking and engaging with local communities, including representatives at places of worship near the river.

The campaign began on Sunday at Baddakatte, covering areas like BC Road, Inoli, Nandavara temple, and Somanatheshwara Temple. On Monday, the journey continued from Pumpwell to Mangaluru, and on Tuesday, it proceeded from Pumpwell to Ullal. The youth interact with residents, shopkeepers, and business owners along the river’s path, identifying factors contributing to pollution, such as plastic waste, effluents, and poultry waste.

Malligemaadu emphasized that the Nethravati River is Mangaluru’s lifeline, and the campaign is more than just an awareness drive. It serves as an educational experience for the youth, helping them connect with the community and fostering a sense of responsibility to protect the river. The youths are learning to identify environmental issues and exploring actionable solutions.

Following the campaign, the team will submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner based on public suggestions and recommendations for protecting the river. Similar initiatives are being conducted in various districts to address environmental challenges statewide.
