MANGALURU: A young man was stabbed to death late Sunday night in Baikampady following a heated quarrel that reportedly began after a dispute over money for alcohol. The incident occurred on December 9, 2025, and has left the local community shocked due to the sudden escalation of what initially appeared to be a minor disagreement.

Victim and accused identified

The deceased has been identified as Sachin Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh who had been residing in Baikampady for work. The accused, Praveen Shivashankarappa, is originally from Belagavi district and was living in a rented house in the same locality. According to the police, both men lived in neighbouring houses and were familiar with each other.

Quarrel escalates into fatal attack

According to initial reports, Sachin had approached Praveen on Sunday evening, asking him for money to purchase alcohol. Praveen refused and asked him to leave. Later that night, after consuming alcohol, Sachin allegedly returned to Praveen’s house and began verbally abusing his parents. Enraged by the confrontation, Praveen reportedly attacked Sachin with a knife, stabbing him in the neck. Sachin died on the spot due to the severity of the injury.

Residents of the area, startled by the commotion, alerted the authorities. Panambur Police Inspector Saleem Abbas and his team soon arrived at the location, conducted an inspection and registered a case of murder.

Swift police action leads to quick arrest

In a significant display of prompt action, Panambur Police arrested the accused within an hour of the incident. The murder took place at around 11:45 pm, and the police received information within fifteen minutes. Acting swiftly, Inspector Abbas and his team collected intelligence inputs and began tracing the suspect’s movements.

Praveen had reportedly gone to Mangaluru Railway Station in an attempt to flee the city. However, police teams reached the station quickly and succeeded in arresting him before he could escape. Officers stated that timely information and coordinated efforts played a crucial role in ensuring the accused did not evade custody.

Investigation underway

The police are now investigating the sequence of events that led to the fatal escalation. Statements from neighbours, witnesses and the families involved are being recorded to verify the circumstances surrounding the dispute. Officials are also examining whether the accused acted alone and if the crime was committed in a fit of rage without premeditation.

A post-mortem examination is expected to provide further clarity on the injuries sustained by Sachin Kumar. The murder weapon, believed to be the knife used in the attack, has been recovered by the police.

Community in shock

Residents of Baikampady have expressed shock over the incident, noting that both individuals were known locally and had not previously been involved in any major disputes. The sudden nature of the attack, sparked allegedly by alcohol-related disagreement, has raised concerns about substance abuse and late-night altercations in the area.
