Mangaluru: A tragic case of alleged abetment to suicide has emerged in the city, where a 22-year-old youth reportedly died by suicide, allegedly unable to cope with mental harassment linked to a personal relationship.
The deceased has been identified as Muhammed Ashiq, a resident of Edapadavu near Moodushedde. According to reports, he died by suicide at his residence around midnight on March 21. The exact cause of the incident was initially unclear, but subsequent investigation has brought new details to light.
Mobile probe reveals disturbing details
Police sources indicated that a detailed examination of Ashiq’s mobile phone has revealed conversations and digital evidence that may be crucial to the case. Investigators are currently analysing chat records and other data, which reportedly point towards emotional distress linked to his relationship.
Ashiq was a student at a private college in Kuloor, where he had developed a relationship with a fellow student, Sameeha Saba, a resident of Ullal. The two were said to have shared a close bond over a period of time.
However, according to preliminary findings and family statements, the relationship had recently deteriorated. It is alleged that Saba had begun distancing herself from Ashiq, which may have contributed to his emotional distress.
Family alleges harassment and instigation
A formal complaint has been filed by Ashiq’s father, Muhammed Haneef, at the Kavoor Police Station. In his complaint, he has accused Saba of subjecting his son to mental harassment and emotional distress.
The complaint alleges that she used abusive language and, on certain occasions, told Ashiq to “go and die.” It has also been alleged that she was on a video call with him at the time of the incident and may have instigated him to take the extreme step.
The family has further claimed that Ashiq was emotionally invested in the relationship and that Saba allegedly exploited his feelings. They have accused her of manipulating him financially as well, alleging that she made him spend money under the pretext of the relationship.
Family members described Ashiq as sincere and deeply committed, stating that the emotional strain caused by the alleged behaviour pushed him into a vulnerable state.
Police register case, investigation underway
Kavoor Police Station has registered a case of alleged abetment to suicide and initiated an investigation into the matter. Officials are currently examining all available evidence, including digital communication records and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police sources stated that the alleged video call at the time of the incident is a key aspect of the investigation. Forensic analysis of the mobile data is being carried out to verify the claims made in the complaint.
Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests, and officials emphasised that all allegations are subject to verification as part of due legal process.
Growing concern over mental health among youth
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over mental health challenges among young people, particularly in the context of personal relationships and emotional stress. Experts often stress the importance of support systems, counselling, and timely intervention in such situations.
While the investigation continues, authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the legal process to take its course.
Conclusion
The death of Muhammed Ashiq has raised serious questions about emotional well-being, accountability, and the role of digital interactions in personal relationships. As the police probe progresses, the focus remains on uncovering the truth behind the allegations.
Further updates are expected as investigators analyse evidence and record statements. Meanwhile, the case serves as a sobering reminder of the need for awareness, sensitivity, and support in dealing with mental health issues.
