Washington: In a recent string of tragedies, an Indian student studying in the US has died, and the police have launched an investigation into it, the Indian Consulate in New York said on Friday.
Uma Satya Sai Gadde is the deceased, a student studying in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Consulate General of India in New York, in a post on X, informed about the demise of the Indian student. “Deeply saddened by the unfortunate demise of Mr. Uma Satya Sai Gadde, an Indian student in Cleveland, Ohio,” the consulate said.

The consulate also mentioned that they remain in touch with Gadde’s family in India during this time of distress. “All possible assistance is being extended, including to transport Mr. Uma Gadde’s mortal remains to India at the earliest,” the consulate said.
Since the beginning of 2024, at least six Indian and Indian-origin students in the US have died. The community is concerned with the string of deaths as they notice rising incidents of attacks on students from India.
A 34-year-old trained classical dancer from India, Amarnath Ghosh, was shot dead in St. Louis, Missouri, at the beginning of this year. Later, Sameer Kamath, 23, an Indian-American student at Purdue University, was found dead on February 5. Indian-origin IT executive Vivek Taneja, 41, suffered serious injuries during an assault outside a restaurant in Washington. He succumbed to the injuries marking the seventh death of Indian or Indian origin in the US.
Worried, the Indian Embassy in Washington, in order to address the growing concerns regarding the deaths and attacks, recently held an interaction.
A virtual gathering convened Indian students representing 90 universities across the United States, facilitated by Chargé d’Affaires Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan.
The discussion revolved around student well-being and strategies for maintaining connections within the broader Indian diaspora. Approximately 150 office bearers and students from various Indian Student Associations participated, alongside Consul Generals from key Indian diplomatic missions in Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, New York, and Seattle.
