EU Introduces Extended Multi-Entry Schengen Visas for Indian Citizens

Date : 23-04-2024

New Delhi: The European Union (EU) has announced a new provision enabling Indian citizens to apply for a multiple entry Schengen visa with extended validity, as per a statement released today.

Under this updated visa regime, termed the “cascade” system, Indian nationals residing in India seeking Schengen (short-stay) visas can now access visas with longer validity, contingent upon an established travel history, subject to passport validity, the EU disclosed.

On April 18, the European Commission approved specific regulations for granting multiple entry visas to Indian citizens, which offer more favorable conditions compared to the existing Visa Code regulations.

According to the revised visa guidelines for India, individuals from the country can now receive extended multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years, subsequent to the lawful use of two visas within the preceding three years.

Following the two-year visa, a five-year visa may typically be issued, provided the passport maintains sufficient validity. During the validity of these visas, holders are entitled to travel privileges equivalent to those of visa-free nationals, stated the EU.

This decision reflects the strengthened ties outlined in the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, emphasizing comprehensive collaboration on migration policy, with a pivotal focus on facilitating people-to-people exchanges due to India’s significance as an EU partner.

It’s important to note that Schengen visas permit holders to travel freely within the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. These visas are not restricted by purpose but do not confer the right to work.

The Schengen area encompasses 29 European countries, including 25 EU member states, namely: [list of countries]. Additionally, it includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
