Mysuru: In an innovative approach to forest fire prevention, the Leopard Task Force has been deployed for the first time in the Chamundi Hills area, a popular tourist destination that attracts thousands of visitors daily. Alongside this initiative, the Forest Department has implemented rigorous measures to ensure the safety of the hill area and its visitors.

To preemptively combat potential fire hazards, the Forest Department has demarcated approximately 68 km across Chamundi Hills and other vulnerable areas prone to fire incidents. This includes locations that have previously experienced fire outbreaks. As part of the preventive measures, fire lines have been constructed, contributing significantly to the absence of fire incidents in the Chamundi hill forest thus far.

A dedicated team of six personnel from the Leopard Task Force conducts regular patrols on the hill to monitor and deter any unauthorized activities that could lead to fires. Tourists are consistently advised against using flammable materials in the forest area and are urged not to litter, especially with plastic waste. In the event of a fire, this specialized team is equipped with a rapid response vehicle and firefighting equipment to swiftly extinguish any flames.

In addition to the Leopard Task Force, a total of 14 individuals have been designated to manage fire incidents on Chamundi Hill. Several fire watchers are stationed at three watchtowers strategically located across the hill, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring for any signs of fire or smoke.

Upon detecting smoke or fire, the dedicated firefighting vehicle, equipped with six sprayers and manned by a team of four, is immediately dispatched to the affected area. These trained crews aim to reach the site within ten minutes to initiate fire suppression efforts.

Forest officials appealed to people to report any fire incidents or smoke observed within the hill range to authorities. If possible, assist forest personnel and the Leopard Task Force in firefighting efforts. Cooperate with forest personnel to facilitate access to the fire location. Exercise caution to prevent traffic congestion in the area.

KN Basavaraju, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Mysore, emphasized that forest department personnel have undergone training by fire force personnel to enhance their firefighting skills. Comprehensive disaster management preparations have also been put in place to effectively manage any unforeseen incidents.

With these proactive measures and collaborative efforts between the Forest Department, Leopard Task Force, and the public, Chamundi Hills aims to remain a safe and pristine destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts alike.
