Life will always give you a second chance, and it is your decision that will decide how the future will be. Gus Van Sant’s film Good Will Hunter does a fantastic job of showing how it’s never too late to pursue your aspirations and not give up on them. It won the Academy award in 1998 for Best Actor in a Supporting Role by Robin Williams and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
The film showcases the incredible journey of Matt Damon’s character Will Hunting is portrayed in the film. We see that he is a lonely, angry, and incredibly talented young guy and learns how he overcame obstacles in his life to discover himself, find love, and realise his potential. His best friend Chuckie (Ben Affleck), a therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), and his love Skylar (Minnie Driver) assisted him in achieving his goals.
Hunting is a brilliant self-taught youth who always wanted to be a Mathematician. He is an orphan and had a terrible childhood. He is unable to attend college due to his financial situation and the closest he ever comes to realising his dream is by working as a janitor at MIT.
However, he ultimately earns respect for his intelligence one day by answering a Math problem that none of the other pupils could. After solving the problem, a Professor (Stellan Skarsgard) takes him under his wing and tries to change his personality. Despite fulfilling his dream, he falls into depression. The Professor immediately realises that to connect with Will’s sensitive side, he will need the assistance of an old friend, played by Robin Williams.
Good Will Hunting is all you could ask for in a film. It simultaneously combines humour and sadness with a positive message about life. Thanks to the incredible writing done by Damon and Affleck, the film touches the heart of every viewer positively. Each character is carefully crafted and the performances and chemistry between the cast make it an extraordinary masterpiece.
Robin William’s character is worth all the praise. The way he has portrayed his character is ideal for the part of a therapist. Even the conversation between Will and Sean will leave the viewers with a beautiful feeling of how their chats create some of the best moments in the film. It holds sadness, humour, and uncertainties will face in life and one could easily relate to the character.
In the end, I can say that anyone, who is trying to overcome the challenges life brings can be motivated by the story of Good Will Hunting. It inspires people to a whole different level and urges them to reach their full potential and let go of the past and live their dreams.
