Monsoon ‘magic’ on Smart City Mangaluru

Come Monsoons and our beloved City is flooded with water. The roads are filled with water and there is no way we can move our vehicles on to the road.

This time the level of water had risen so much that the flood water had entered the houses. As it is, its difficult to clean the house. Imagine their plight. The fishes that we normally go to the market to buy were swimming in this water on the roads. Schools remained shut and the kids remained at home. The drains overflowed as the water kept rushing in. All this in a day’s rain.

Our City which was accustomed to heavy rains since ages has been modified in such a way that it cannot withstand a day’s rain. Mangaluru has become SMART CITY. There is a huge outcry against the politicians and authorities. Hope we succeed to make our ‘Dear City’ SMART.

Along with the authorities, we have ourselves to blame too. Near our house we see a heap of garbage pile. This is inspite of the fact that Mangaluru City Corporation has arranged for garbage collection from our homes. Probably the guy isn’t very happy with the collection service. He wants it collected from his kitchen may be. Or that he gets a high after throwing the garbage on the road.

Some people simply destroy the public property. He doesn’t get anything out of it but he is more happy seeing it in a bad shape.

Also we see most of them not follow basic decency while driving. In a narrow road too we want to overtake the front vehicle even if it means denting either of the vehicles. (No. I am not making any mention of the autorickshaw drivers)

Also when it comes to our building, we do not mind paying bribe and getting permit for illegal construction on the drains.

I have a suggestion. Why don’t we first put these act of garbage throwing to rest. Let us record (just a picture) such miscreants and circulate it. We could also forward the pictures to any newspapers willing to carry it. Let us start an initiative “Catch the Miscreant” till we feel our people take responsibility for their actions and learn to keep our City clean.
