Subrahmanya Sashti, also known as Skanda Subrahmanya Sashti is being celebrated by Hindus across the southern India.The Festival dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya (Skanda). It is observed on the ‘sashti’ during the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of moon) in the month of ‘Margashira’ as per the traditional Hindu calendar.
Lord Subrahmanya is the second son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is known by different names like ‘Kartikeya’, ‘Velan Kumaran’,and ‘Murugan’ For this reason this day is also celebrated with different names like ‘Kukke Subrahmanya Sashti’ and ‘Kartikeya Subrahmanya Sashti’
Subrahmanya Sashti is celebrated with immense fervour and gaiety in the southern parts of the country, namely in the states of Karnataka,Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
It is one of the most awaited events in South India mainly Karnataka with reports pouring in from Kukke Subramanya, Siddalingapura near Mysuru and Kudige in Kodagu. Thousands of devotees were seen thronging temples right from the morning.
Few ardent fans of Tamilnadu CM J Jayalalaitha were seen praying for health too in various parts of Tamilnadu.
