Mumbai City FC Secures Playoff Spot with 2-0 Win Over Bengaluru FC
Mumbai City FC booked their spot in the playoffs of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 with a 2-0 victory against Bengaluru FC at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Tuesday. The win propelled the Islanders to sixth place with 36 points, while Bengaluru FC finished their campaign with 38 points under Gerard Zaragoza.
From the start, Mumbai City’s attacking unit was relentless, with Jorge Ortiz coming close to scoring after rattling the crossbar with a powerful left-footed shot, following a pass from Lallianzuala Chhangte. The visitors’ offensive pressure soon paid off in the eighth minute, when Nikolaos Karelis delivered a precise pass to Chhangte, who slotted the ball past Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh to give Mumbai the lead.
Bengaluru FC fought back with attempts from Ryan Williams and Vinith Venkatesh, but Mumbai City’s defense held strong, blocking both efforts. Karelis doubled Mumbai’s lead in the 37th minute, converting a penalty into the bottom right corner after being fouled in the box.
In the second half, Bengaluru tried to find a way back, with Sunil Chhetri creating a chance for Edgar Mendez, but his header went wide. Despite some more chances from Mumbai, including a long-range shot from Vikram Partap Singh in the 79th minute, the score remained unchanged, and Mumbai secured their playoff berth with a 2-0 victory.
