Mysuru: Renowned sculptor Arun Yogiraj has completed a new Krishna Shila (black stone) statue of former Karnataka chief minister D. Devaraj Urs, which has been installed at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office complex in Siddhartha Nagar, Mysuru.

The sculptor said it took six months to complete the statue, which is now ready for unveiling.

Statue replaced following complaints

The new statue has been commissioned after the earlier statue of Devaraj Urs, installed at the same location and unveiled by then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in November 2025, drew criticism from several quarters.

Complaints had been raised that the previous statue did not bear a close resemblance to the former chief minister, prompting authorities to order its replacement.

Following the objections, the government decided to commission a fresh statue and entrusted the task to renowned sculptor Arun Yogiraj.

Six months of work

Speaking about the project, Arun Yogiraj said the creation of the Krishna Shila statue took six months of meticulous work.

The sculptor, who has earned national recognition for his craftsmanship, carefully worked on the details to ensure that the statue closely resembles the late leader and reflects his personality and stature.

Officials said the newly completed statue has now been installed at the DC Office complex in Siddhartha Nagar and is awaiting formal inauguration.

Unveiling to be held later

Authorities stated that the statue will be unveiled at a later date in the presence of dignitaries and government officials.

The installation of the new statue is expected to address concerns raised over the previous sculpture and serve as a fitting tribute to Devaraj Urs, who is remembered for his contributions to social justice and land reforms in Karnataka.

Devaraj Urs served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka and is widely regarded as one of the state’s most influential leaders, particularly for his initiatives aimed at empowering marginalised communities.

The unveiling ceremony is expected to be announced shortly by the district administration.
