Mysuru: BEML Limited has achieved a major milestone in India’s heavy engineering sector with the unveiling of the country’s first indigenous 35-ton electric dump truck at its Mysuru complex. The vehicle was formally flagged off by Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy in the presence of senior officials and industry partners.
The launch marks a significant step towards sustainable industrial solutions, particularly in the mining sector, where heavy-duty vehicles play a crucial role.
Major step toward sustainable mining
The newly developed electric dump truck is designed to promote cleaner mining operations by eliminating tailpipe emissions. As a zero-emission vehicle, it aligns with India’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments and long-term carbon reduction goals.
Officials said the introduction of such electric heavy machinery is expected to reduce the environmental footprint of mining activities, which have traditionally relied on diesel-powered equipment.
The initiative also supports the government’s push for greener technologies across infrastructure and industrial sectors.
Advanced indigenous technology
The 35-ton electric dump truck has been fully designed and manufactured in India, showcasing indigenous engineering capabilities. It is built to meet global standards in performance, safety and durability, making it suitable for demanding mining environments.
Key specifications of the vehicle include a payload capacity of 35 tonnes and a gross vehicle weight of approximately 60 tonnes. It is powered by a high-efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) and supported by a 300 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
The vehicle offers an energy efficiency of around 85–90 per cent and is equipped with a regenerative braking system that recovers energy during downhill operations, thereby enhancing overall efficiency.
Smart battery and safety systems
To ensure reliable performance in harsh conditions, the truck features an advanced Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) with liquid cooling technology. This system helps maintain optimal battery temperature, improves safety and extends the lifespan of the battery.
The vehicle is also fitted with IP67 and IP68-rated electrical components, ensuring protection against dust and water ingress. Integrated fire protection systems further enhance operational safety, making it suitable for continuous use in challenging environments.
Strong economic and operational benefits
In addition to environmental advantages, the electric dump truck offers substantial cost benefits for mining operators. According to company estimates, it can reduce energy costs by 60–70 per cent and lower overall operating costs by 40–60 per cent.
The reduction in mechanical components compared to conventional vehicles also leads to lower maintenance requirements. The estimated payback period for operators is between one and two years, making it an economically viable alternative.
To support operations, BEML has also developed scalable charging infrastructure capable of charging the battery from 0 to 80 per cent within 60 to 90 minutes, enabling minimal downtime.
Leadership perspective
Speaking at the launch, CMD Shantanu Roy described the development as a defining moment in the company’s journey towards innovation and sustainability. He emphasised the organisation’s focus on indigenisation and environmentally responsible technologies that meet global benchmarks.
Boost to self-reliance
The unveiling of the electric dump truck is expected to strengthen India’s push for self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It positions BEML Limited as a key contributor to the global transition towards green mining technologies and sustainable industrial practices.
About the company
