Mysuru: A heritage bungalow in Mysuru has been transformed into a warm and characterful retreat, with its interiors drawing inspiration from the city’s natural beauty and its homeowners’ love for birdwatching.

The bungalow, known as Raj Vilas, was acquired by Aditya Guru Dev and Samyukta Lakshmi, grandchildren of the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore. Originally purchased with a strong structure but a deteriorating roof, the property underwent restoration from 2019.

Bedrooms inspired by Mysuru’s birds

Designer Shruti Jaipuria of MAIA Design Studio drew inspiration from the region’s winged inhabitants while designing the bedrooms.

One bedroom takes its soft ochre tones from the yellow-throated bulbul, while another features the varied blues associated with the Indian roller. A third bedroom reflects the white and pink hues of the painted stork.

The bird-inspired palette adds a distinctive identity to each room while reflecting the homeowners’ longstanding interest in birdwatching.

A home rooted in old Mysuru

The original plan was to transform the bungalow into a four-bedroom boutique homestay where visitors could experience Mysuru’s architecture, interiors and crafts in an authentic setting.

However, during the restoration, the family decided to retain the property as a weekend home. Raj Vilas consequently became a private retreat rather than a commercial accommodation.

Jaipuria said the intention was to allow people to experience the character of Mysuru rather than create a generic hotel-style environment.

Architecture meets local character

The property features elements that complement its setting, including peach-coloured walls, green shutters and a lush verandah overlooking the garden.

Through its colours, design and connection with nature, Raj Vilas reflects a more personal interpretation of Mysuru — one that combines heritage architecture with the rhythms of the natural landscape.#Mysuru #RajVilas #Mysore #InteriorDesign #HeritageHome #Birdwatching #MAIADesignStudio
