Mysuru: In a moving display of loyalty, two dogs captured hearts in Metagalli, Mysuru, by participating in the funeral of Basava, also fondly called Mahalinga, a temple bull attached to the Mahalingeshwara Temple. Basava tragically passed away after being attacked by a rabid dog.

Known as a gentle and sacred presence, Basava was more than just a temple animal — he was a symbol of tradition and a beloved companion to two dogs, Blackie and Brownie. Locals were deeply touched when the two dogs remained close throughout every stage of Basava’s final journey.

As Basava’s body was taken in a solemn procession through Metagalli and BM Sri Nagar, the dogs quietly followed, drawing emotional reactions from onlookers. The last rites were performed near the temple, where a grave was dug with a JCB machine. Even during the burial, Blackie and Brownie stayed by their friend’s side, standing silently — as if mourning in their own way.

Villagers say the dogs even gazed at Mahalinga one final time before walking away, leaving behind a poignant message about the depth of animal bonds and unspoken friendship.

This heartfelt incident has left the people of Metagalli emotional and reflective.
