Mysuru, Karnataka: Dr. Nandini K. L., who was born in the small village of Kithaburu in the Malnad region of Alur taluk in Hassan district, has emerged as a symbol of resilience and academic excellence, overcoming severe personal hardship through education and determination.
Raised in a family deeply rooted in agriculture, Nandini is the daughter of Lingaraje Gowda and Jayamma, who owned nearly 100 acres of farmland. The family’s livelihood was devastated when their land was submerged following the construction of a dam, forcing a sudden and difficult transition. Witnessing this upheaval at a young age strengthened her resolve to build a future through education.
Despite prolonged financial challenges, Dr. Nandini completed her schooling and higher education entirely in government institutions. Her academic brilliance was evident early on when she scored a perfect 125 out of 125 in Kannada in the SSLC examination, securing the first rank in the district. She also stood second in the district overall with an impressive 98.03 per cent. She later scored 96 per cent in the PUC examination after moving to Hassan for higher studies.

She went on to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism, Sociology and English, during which she stayed at a Government Ladies Hostel. It was during this period that she began her writing career, making her debut in the Josh edition of Kannada Prabha and contributing articles to various publications. Though her parents were associated with politics, Dr. Nandini credits her father’s Gandhian values, integrity and commitment to ethical public life as the guiding principles that shaped her outlook.
Driven by a passion for journalism, she completed her Master’s degree in Mass Communication and Journalism from the University of Mysore, Manasagangothri. After graduating in 2014, she joined Vijaya Karnataka, a leading Kannada daily under the Times Group, where she worked for nearly six years. Her career in the newsroom was marked by discipline, credibility and ethical reporting, including her work in film journalism, where she interacted with several prominent cinema personalities.

In 2020, she ventured into digital media by launching her own YouTube channel, Digital Maadhyama, with the aim of promoting responsible journalism in the digital space. The platform is led by Dr. Nandini, with technical support from her husband, Akarsh Haralakatta, and continued encouragement from her family.
Adding another milestone to her journey, Dr. Nandini was recently awarded a Doctorate at a convocation ceremony held in Mysuru, where the degree was conferred by the Governor of Karnataka. Her doctoral research was conducted under the guidance of Dr. N. Mamatha, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.
Her thesis, titled “A Study on Dr. Ambareesh’s Contribution to the Land of Cinema and Politics,” provides a detailed analysis of the cultural, emotional and socio-political impact of the late actor-politician Dr. Ambareesh, popularly known as Sandalwood’s Kanwarlal.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Nandini said that her research journey began during her first pregnancy and culminated while she is expecting her second child. “The journey took nearly five years, with an additional year lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, but every moment was worth it,” she said.
From a village lost to submergence to a career built on scholarship, journalism and public engagement, Dr. Nandini K. L.’s story stands as a testament to the power of education, perseverance and integrity, offering inspiration to young aspirants across the state, particularly women from rural backgrounds.
