Mysuru: The recent heavy rainfall in the Malnad and Mysuru regions has led to significant flooding, landslides, and heightened tourist activity. Popular destinations such as Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, and Sakleshpur are witnessing a surge in visitors eager to experience the monsoon season, even as local officials are forced to close several tourist spots for safety reasons.
Jog Falls in Shivamogga, a renowned monsoon attraction, continues to draw large crowds. Despite the heavy rains, the site sees an average of 2,000 to 2,500 visitors on weekdays and up to 7,000 to 8,000 on weekends and public holidays. Similarly, Sakleshpur, despite facing severe weather conditions, is attracting a steady stream of young tourists. Resort owner Kiran Hulsur reports that while visitor numbers are lower compared to peak summer or Christmas periods, the inquiries and occupancy rates remain strong.
Kodagu, another major monsoon destination, remains open with its popular attractions like Irpu and Abbey waterfalls drawing adventure seekers. BG Ananthashayana from the Kodagu District Homestays Association notes that landslides and rain-related incidents have not impacted the tourist spots, allowing tourism activities to proceed without major disruptions.
However, the Mandya district administration is struggling to manage crowds flocking to riverbanks in Srirangapatna taluk, posing safety risks. With the Cauvery and Kapila rivers overflowing due to high dam discharges, Chamarajanagar has banned tourist entry to Bharachukki and Hogenakkal falls and deployed lifeguards for safety.
