Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner M K Savitha has assured that steps will be taken to restore the historic gate on Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wadiyar Road leading to Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel.
The assurance came after heritage activist Mike Prakash submitted a memorandum highlighting the deteriorating condition of the Wadiyar-era structure. The issue had earlier been highlighted in a report published on July 19.
Heritage structure faces years of neglect
The ornate gate, located in the heart of Mysuru, has reportedly remained damaged for more than a decade. It is now surrounded by shrubs and wild vegetation, while peepal trees have taken root on top of one of its pillars.
Prakash said the roots could further weaken the structure if they are not completely removed. Although trees had been cleared from the site earlier, he said the roots were not removed fully, allowing vegetation to grow again.
Residents have expressed concern over the condition of the heritage structure and urged authorities to take immediate steps to protect it.
Gate also creates traffic bottleneck
The gate stands on the busy road connecting Mysuru with T Narasipur and Bannur. According to Prakash, its narrow central passage makes it difficult for two buses or other large vehicles to pass simultaneously.
Residents have suggested opening one side of the gate for vehicles travelling towards Chamundi Hill or the city to ease congestion while protecting the structure.
Prakash has urged the MCC to clear the vegetation, remove tree roots, restore the damaged portions of the gate and examine measures to improve traffic movement.
The commissioner’s assurance has raised hopes that the long-neglected structure will receive attention and that an important reminder of Mysuru’s royal heritage will be preserved.
