Mysuru: The Kabini reservoir in H D Kote taluk continued to receive heavy inflows following widespread rainfall in Kerala’s Wayanad district, prompting authorities to increase the discharge of water and issue a flood alert for downstream areas. Residents living along the riverbanks have been advised to shift to safer locations as water levels continue to rise.

Heavy inflow into Kabini reservoir

The Kabini reservoir, a major component of the Cauvery basin, witnessed a sharp increase in inflow after continuous rainfall in the Wayanad region.

Officials said the reservoir was receiving an inflow of 19,000 cusecs, leading dam authorities to increase the outflow to 25,000 cusecs on Saturday night to regulate the water level and ensure the safety of the reservoir.

The release is expected to raise the water level downstream over the next few hours.

Bidralli bridge submerged

Following the increased discharge from the reservoir, the Bidralli bridge was submerged under rising river waters.

The inundation disrupted movement across the bridge, and authorities have urged the public to avoid using submerged roads and bridges until water levels recede.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation and assessing the impact of the increased release on nearby villages.

Flood alert issued for downstream areas

The dam authorities have issued a flood alert for villages situated along the downstream stretches of the Kabini River.

Residents living near the riverbanks have been advised to move to safer locations as a precautionary measure. They have also been asked to shift their cattle and livestock to higher ground to prevent losses in the event of further flooding.

Emergency teams remain on alert to respond to any flood-related incidents.

Officials are keeping a close watch on rainfall in the Kabini catchment area and the reservoir’s inflow.

With the southwest monsoon remaining active, further rainfall in Wayanad and surrounding regions could lead to additional increases in inflow. Authorities have appealed to the public to follow official advisories and avoid venturing into flooded areas or riverbanks.
