Starting August 15, all types of plastic items, including water bottles, will be banned in temples governed by the Muzrai Department in Karnataka, announced Transport and Muzrai Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy.

Speaking after a progress review meeting at Vikasa Soudha, the Minister said a statewide ‘Plastic-Free Temple’ campaign will be launched, with a two-month grace period to help temples phase out stocked plastic items.

Key Announcements:

  • Plastic ban enforcement in Muzrai temples from Aug 15, with a transition window till mid-October.
  • New Temple Development Authorities will be formed for:
    • Huligemma Temple
    • Male Mahadeshwara Temple
    • Ghati Subramanya Temple
    • Renuka Yellamma Temple
  • Master Plans are being developed for their structured growth.

Land Reclamation Drive:

  • 11 acres of encroached land belonging to Sri Chamundeshwari Temple, Chamundi Hill (Mysuru), have been cleared.
  • Ongoing efforts to reclaim the remaining encroached land.

Administrative Updates:

  • Dharmika Parishat (religious councils) have been set up in 8 districts; plans are underway to establish them in all 31 districts.

Devotee Facilities:

  • Three-star amenities will be introduced at State Bhavans in cities like Tirupati, Tulajapura, and Pandharpur.
  • Online room booking systems to be launched for these Bhavans soon.
