Mysuru: State-run Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses have recorded a significantly higher number of accidents compared to private buses in the district over the past three years, raising concerns about passenger safety despite their reputation for reliability.
Data reveals higher accident numbers
According to an analysis conducted by the police and transport department, a total of 307 KSRTC buses were involved in road accidents in the last three years, compared to 73 private buses during the same period.
The data indicates a consistent rise in accident cases involving state-run buses. In 2023, 112 KSRTC buses were involved in accidents, followed by 74 cases in 2024 and a sharp increase to 121 cases in 2025.
In comparison, private buses recorded 20 accidents in 2023, 24 in 2024, and 29 in 2025, showing a gradual but lower trend overall.
Mysuru ranks among top divisions
Officials noted that the Mysuru rural division reported the second-highest number of accidents involving KSRTC buses in the state, next only to the Bengaluru division. This has drawn attention to the need for stronger safety measures in the region.
The findings have raised concerns among commuters, as state-run buses are generally perceived to be safer than private transport options.
Causes identified in report
The report highlighted several key factors contributing to the accidents. These include overspeeding, rash and negligent driving, and instances of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Other contributing factors include violation of traffic rules, poor maintenance of vehicles, unscientific road humps, and खराब road conditions. Officials stressed that a combination of driver behaviour and infrastructure issues has played a role in the rising number of accidents.
Safety awareness efforts continue
Authorities from both the transport and police departments have been organising regular road safety awareness programmes for drivers. These workshops focus on promoting safe driving practices and adherence to traffic regulations.
Additionally, KSRTC has implemented a system of shift-based duties for drivers to ensure adequate rest and reduce fatigue-related risks.
KSRTC outlines corrective measures
Responding to the concerns, KSRTC Mysuru rural division divisional controller Srinivas stated that several measures have been introduced to reduce accident cases involving state-run buses.
These include daily training sessions for drivers, incentives and rewards for safe driving, and recognition programmes such as appreciation certificates and gold medals for exemplary performance.
He also emphasised that the corporation has prioritised regular maintenance of buses to ensure roadworthiness and safety.
Call for stricter enforcement
Experts have stressed the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to address the issue effectively. Retired police official Mahadevaiah pointed out that rash driving, speeding, and drunk driving remain major causes of accidents.
He urged both the transport and police departments to adopt stronger measures to safeguard not only bus passengers but also other road users.
Conclusion
The rising number of accidents involving KSRTC buses in Mysuru district has sparked concern despite ongoing safety initiatives. While authorities have introduced corrective measures, experts believe that stricter enforcement and improved road conditions are essential to ensure safer public transport.
