Mysuru: A 64-year-old man has surrendered before the Alanahalli police nearly three weeks after allegedly murdering a woman with whom he was living in Mysuru. The crime came to light only after the accused walked into the police station and confessed to the killing.
The deceased has been identified as Jyothi (40), a native of Agasanapura village in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district. The accused, Siddaraju (64), is a native of Kanakapura.
Accused and victim were living together
According to police, Siddaraju and Jyothi had been living together in a rented house at Ashraya Layout in Bhugathahalli on Bannur Road in Mysuru.
Investigators said Jyothi’s husband had died around 10 years ago. Following his death, she reportedly began living with Siddaraju, who is said to be her relative. The two had allegedly been in a relationship for several years.
Police said they were residing together in the rented accommodation until the alleged incident took place in July.
Frequent quarrels preceded the incident
Preliminary investigations suggest that the couple had been involved in frequent arguments in recent months.
According to police, Siddaraju allegedly suspected that Jyothi had begun distancing herself from him and was frequently visiting her parents’ house. This reportedly led to repeated disputes between the two.
Investigators believe another argument broke out on the night of July 13, escalating into a fatal incident.
Woman allegedly smothered to death
Police suspect that Siddaraju allegedly smothered Jyothi while she was asleep before fleeing the house.
After the incident, the rented house remained locked, preventing neighbours or others from discovering the crime.
As a result, the alleged murder remained undetected for nearly 20 days, with no complaint being lodged during that period.
Confession leads to discovery
The case came to light only after Siddaraju surrendered before the Alanahalli Police Station and confessed to the alleged murder.
Following his confession, police launched an investigation and initiated legal procedures.
Officials are now examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and verifying the sequence of events based on the accused’s statement and other available evidence.
The body has been recovered, and further investigation is underway.
Investigation continues
Police are collecting forensic and other evidence to establish the exact cause of death and determine the events leading to the alleged murder.
Authorities have registered a case and are continuing the investigation. Further details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
