A massive fire broke out in the Old Kesare area of the city late Sunday night, destroying more than a dozen godowns and causing extensive property damage. The blaze, which raged for several hours, left local residents shaken and prompted an ongoing police investigation.
Fire reported early morning, battle lasted hours
According to officials, the fire is believed to have started late on Sunday night, but the fire department received information only around 4.30 am on Monday. Multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and firefighters worked relentlessly for several hours to bring the flames under control.
Despite sustained efforts, the intensity of the fire made containment difficult, as the godowns stored a variety of goods, which fuelled the blaze and caused thick smoke to spread across the area.
Panic among residents, no casualties reported
The incident created panic among residents living near the godowns, many of whom rushed out of their homes fearing the fire might spread further. Police cordoned off the area to prevent crowding and ensure smooth firefighting operations.
Officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported, though property losses are expected to be substantial. A detailed assessment of the damage is yet to be completed.
Arson angle under investigation
Preliminary investigations suggest the possibility of arson, and police are examining whether foul play was involved. Officers are collecting evidence from the site and questioning locals and godown owners to establish the exact cause of the fire.
“The cause is not yet confirmed. All angles, including deliberate ignition, are being probed,” a police official said.
Fire safety officials have urged godown owners to strictly follow safety norms, especially in densely populated areas, to prevent such incidents in the future.
