In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is introducing onboard technology to help visually impaired passengers board buses independently. Initially launched as a pilot project in Mysuru city buses, the service will be extended based on its success.

The Mysuru urban division has begun installing assistive devices in 200 buses, with five already equipped for experimental use. These devices will enable visually impaired passengers to identify route numbers and locate bus doors using an audio cue system.

Tech for accessibility

Developed in collaboration with IIT Delhi and Raised Lines Foundation, the system comprises:
🔹 A bus unit with a speaker for route and boarding information.
🔹 A user device for personal accessibility.
🔹 A programming & diagnostic unit for maintenance.

With 350 visually impaired passengers identified across Mysuru and Nanjangud, KSRTC has procured 400 such devices from Delhi. Additionally, a mobile app is in the works to further aid accessibility.

The GIZ organisation is supporting the initiative, and officials hope this pioneering move will transform public transport inclusivity across Karnataka.
