Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has issued a final notice to owners of unused and abandoned vehicles parked illegally on public roads, footpaths and other public spaces, directing them to remove the vehicles by September 12.
The civic body said such vehicles not only obstruct public movement but also affect the city’s cleanliness and beautification efforts. Several abandoned vehicles have remained in public places for extended periods despite earlier notices issued by the corporation.
Drive launched to clear abandoned vehicles
MCC Commissioner M K Savitha said the corporation had conducted a special drive from August 25 to 31 to identify and clear abandoned and unused vehicles occupying public spaces.
During the drive, notices were affixed to vehicles found parked on roads, footpaths and other public areas for prolonged periods. However, the corporation continued to receive complaints that several vehicle owners had failed to remove them despite being served notices.
The MCC has now provided vehicle owners with another opportunity to voluntarily shift their vehicles.
Owners have been directed to remove the vehicles within seven days of receiving the affixed notice and, in any case, by September 12.
Abandoned vehicles becoming public nuisance
According to the civic body, several locations where unused vehicles have been left for long periods have gradually turned into dumping spots.
The MCC also pointed out that such places could become hubs for illegal activities and breeding grounds for vector-borne diseases. Apart from creating an unhygienic environment, vehicles parked on footpaths and public roads inconvenience pedestrians and motorists.
The corporation has therefore warned owners to act within the stipulated deadline and clear the public spaces voluntarily.
Vehicles to be towed if deadline is missed
The MCC has made it clear that the September 12 deadline will be treated as the final opportunity for owners to remove their vehicles.
If the vehicles remain in public places after the deadline, the corporation will treat them as abandoned and unused vehicles and initiate action to have them removed.
The vehicles will be towed away in accordance with Section 127 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976, along with applicable bylaws and resolutions of the MCC council.
The civic body will recover the expenses incurred for removing, towing and transporting the vehicles from their respective owners.
Vehicles may be auctioned or scrapped
The MCC has further warned that vehicles removed under the drive could subsequently be auctioned or scrapped as per the applicable procedures.
The corporation has stressed that the deadline will not be extended further and has urged owners to make use of the final opportunity to clear their vehicles from footpaths, public roads and other civic spaces.
The action is aimed at restoring public spaces, improving pedestrian movement and maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of Mysuru.
