Mysuru: The Indian Air Force’s Suryakiran Aerobatic Team enthralled spectators at the Bannimantap grounds with a spectacular aerial display during the Mysuru Dasara airshow on Sunday, October 18. However, rain and unfavourable weather conditions forced the team to curtail the performance after around 10 minutes.

The air warriors performed three horizontal manoeuvres using nine Hawk Mk 132 aircraft, leaving the packed crowd impressed by their precision and coordination. The aircraft painted the sky with saffron, white and green smoke trails, adding a tricolour effect to the display.

The show began at around 11.20 am after the gates opened to the public at 9 am. Spectators had gathered in large numbers to witness the aerobatic performance, which was among the attractions of this year’s Dasara celebrations.

Rain cuts short aerial display

The Suryakiran team could perform only a limited number of manoeuvres because of the weather conditions. The formations included an arrow manoeuvre involving all nine aircraft, showcasing the pilots’ synchronisation and the team’s coordinated flying.

Known for its precision, discipline and teamwork, the team operates its aircraft as a cohesive unit, executing formations that require close coordination between pilots.

However, the unfavourable weather prevented the pilots from continuing with the planned programme. The decision to curtail the display was taken keeping the safety of the pilots and aircraft in mind.

Although the performance lasted only about 10 minutes, it offered spectators a glimpse of the team’s aerobatic capabilities. Many in the crowd were disappointed that the full programme could not be completed, but the announcement of another show on Monday raised hopes of witnessing a longer display.

Full show expected on Monday

The Suryakiran Aerobatic Team is scheduled to perform again on Monday, October 19, weather permitting. The team plans to fly all nine Hawk Mk 132 aircraft and showcase a wider range of horizontal and vertical aerobatic manoeuvres.

The planned display is expected to include signature manoeuvres such as loops, barrel rolls, inverted flying and the DNA manoeuvre, along with other intricate formations.

The aircraft are manufactured under licence by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The display will provide spectators another opportunity to see the aircraft perform coordinated aerial routines over Mysuru.

The programme’s completion will depend on weather and flight-safety conditions.

Surya Kiran’s legacy of aerobatic excellence

Established in 1996, the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team represents the Indian Air Force at airshows and public events across India and abroad. The team has conducted more than 800 displays, earning recognition for its formation flying and aerobatic skills.

Its performances demonstrate the precision, discipline and teamwork required to execute complex manoeuvres in close formation. The pilots must maintain exact positions and timing while responding to changing flight conditions.

Beyond its technical displays, the team aims to bring the Indian Air Force closer to the public and inspire young people to explore careers in aviation and military service.

A major attraction of Mysuru Dasara

The airshow is part of the wider Mysuru Dasara festivities, which feature cultural programmes, processions and special events celebrating Karnataka’s heritage.

The Suryakiran team’s participation adds an aviation spectacle to the festival, allowing visitors to witness the coordination between pilots and aircraft at close quarters from the designated viewing area.

Sunday’s curtailed performance demonstrated how weather conditions can affect even carefully planned aerial displays. With another show scheduled for Monday, spectators will have a further opportunity to witness the team’s planned manoeuvres, subject to favourable weather and safety clearance.
