Mysuru: Teachers, principals and academic coordinators from various educational institutions participated in an orientation programme on the revised National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks at BSS Vidyodaya School in Krishnamurthypuram, Mysuru, on Thursday. The programme was organised by Vidya Bharati Uchcha Shiksha Sansthan (VBUSS) in association with Vidya Bharati to familiarise educators with the curriculum changes introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The session focused on helping school leaders and teachers understand the structure, objectives and implementation of the new NCERT textbooks aligned with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF).

Expert explains revised curriculum

The resource person for the programme was Gajanan Londhe, Head of the Programme Office of the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC), NCERT.

During his presentation, Londhe explained the vision behind the revised textbooks and the process of implementing the curriculum reforms introduced under NEP 2020. He outlined the transition from the National Education Policy to the National Curriculum Framework and highlighted the key features of the newly developed NCERT textbooks.

He emphasised that the revised curriculum promotes competency-based learning, holistic education and the effective use of teacher handbooks and digital teaching-learning materials to improve classroom instruction.

Focus on activity-based and holistic learning

The orientation programme covered the four stages of school education under the National Curriculum Framework—Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary.

Londhe explained that the new textbooks encourage activity-based learning, inquiry-driven teaching and the use of visual content to make learning more engaging for students.

He also highlighted the emphasis on multilingual education, integration of local context into classroom learning and the inclusion of Indian knowledge systems to provide students with a more comprehensive educational experience.

According to the organisers, the revised curriculum seeks to make learning more interactive while promoting critical thinking, creativity and practical application of concepts.

New subjects introduced

The programme also highlighted the introduction of Art Education, Vocational Education, and Physical Education and Well-being for students from Classes 3 to 10 under the revised curriculum.

Londhe stressed that school leaders have a crucial role in ensuring the successful implementation of the curriculum through effective academic planning, teacher preparedness and appropriate classroom practices.

He encouraged educators to make full use of the available teacher support materials and digital resources while adopting the revised curriculum.

Textbooks available in 22 Indian languages

Organisers informed participants that the new NCERT textbooks have been made available in 22 Indian languages, supporting the multilingual approach advocated under NEP 2020.

Speaking on the objective of the programme, Praveen Kumar Mellalli of the Karnataka Dakshin Pranth of VBUSS said the orientation was organised to provide educators with a comprehensive understanding of the revised NCERT textbooks.

He said the programme covered the updated curriculum content, evolving knowledge paradigms, structural changes in the textbooks and the curriculum architecture introduced as part of the national education reforms under NEP 2020.
