Mysuru: Senior police officials on Friday inspected the newly constructed Viveka Smaraka – Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre (Viveka Memorial) on Narayana Shastri Road in preparation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Mysuru on August 1.

City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, accompanied by Deputy Commissioners of Police Dr. Harsha Priyamvada (Law and Order) and K.S. Sundar Raj (Crime and Traffic), reviewed the venue along with Swami Yukteshanandaji of the Sri Ramakrishna Ashram.

Security arrangements reviewed

Constructed at a cost of ₹35 crore, the memorial has been built at the site where Swami Vivekananda stayed during his visit to Mysuru in November 1892.

During the inspection, officials examined the semi-circular multi-tiered hall where Prime Minister Modi is expected to interact with major donors and attend a presentation. The police assessed access points, including the hall’s single elevator and stepped entry leading to the main venue.

Police Commissioner Seema Latkar expressed concerns over the layout, citing the lone lift, narrow stairways and limited space, which could pose challenges in meeting the stringent security protocols of the Special Protection Group (SPG).

Officials suggested shifting the proposed interaction with donors and the presentation to a larger hall within the building to ensure smoother security management.

PMO confirmation awaited

According to Sri Ramakrishna Ashram sources, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has conveyed preliminary information regarding the proposed visit, but official confirmation is still awaited.

If the visit goes ahead as planned, Prime Minister Modi is expected to inaugurate the Viveka Memorial, briefly interact with donors and later participate in the main programme at the Sri Ramakrishna Ashram.

Preparations are underway at both the memorial and the Ashram, with workers completing the library, assembling furniture and carrying out beautification works along the approach road.

Meanwhile, an official communication from the PMO is expected shortly, while SPG officials are likely to conduct a comprehensive security inspection over the next 24 to 48 hours.
