Mysuru district health authorities have submitted a proposal to the state government requesting the approval of 24 additional dialysis machines to improve treatment facilities at KR Hospital and the district hospital.

Currently, the 26 machines at KR Hospital’s nephrology unit are struggling to accommodate the rising number of patients, many of whom travel from neighboring districts like Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, and Kodagu. With limited availability, patients often endure waiting periods of 15 days to a month. Private hospitals charge ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 per session, making government hospitals the only viable option for many. KR Hospital alone conducts 1,750 free dialysis sessions per month, treating 65 patients daily across three shifts.

Apart from KR Hospital, 39 dialysis machines are installed across state hospitals in Mysuru district, including nine in the district hospital and others in taluk hospitals like T Narasipur (6), Hunsur (4), Heggadadevanakote (5), Periyapatna (4), KR Nagar (5), Saragur, and Nanjangud (4). Despite efforts to decentralize kidney care to taluk hospitals, the patient load at KR Hospital continues to surge.

District Health Officer Dr. PC Kumaraswamy emphasized the urgent need for additional dialysis machines in the 2025-26 budget, stating that renal disease cases are steadily increasing, with each dialysis session requiring 4-5 hours and patients needing treatment multiple times a week.

Dr. Dakshayini KH, Dean and Director of MMCRI, highlighted that the additional machines would enhance nephrology services and mentioned efforts to secure funding through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
