Mysuru: Mysuru-based Bidaram Krishnappa’s Sri Prasanna Seetharama Mandira, in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture, has organised a special music programme on Thursday, May 28, to mark the 162nd birth anniversary of renowned musician and composer K Vasudevacharya.

The event will be held at 10.30 am at Sri Prasanna Seetharama Mandira on Narayana Shastri Road in Mysuru and is expected to bring together music lovers, scholars and artistes to honour the legendary Carnatic musician’s contribution to Indian classical music.

Addressing a recent press conference in Mysuru, MLA T S Srivathsa said the State government has agreed to officially organise the programme through the Department of Kannada and Culture for the first time.

He said Vasudevacharya had composed more than 200 musical works and deserved greater recognition for his contribution to the field of classical music.

“Vasudevacharya has composed more than 200 musical works. Therefore, I had appealed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to conduct a programme in his honour. For the event on May 28, the State government, through the Department of Kannada and Culture, has agreed to conduct the programme officially for the first time,” Srivathsa said.

Legacy of K Vasudevacharya remembered

K Vasudevacharya is regarded as one of the most respected composers and musicians in Carnatic classical music. His compositions continue to be performed widely by musicians across India.

Known for blending classical depth with lyrical richness, Vasudevacharya made significant contributions to devotional and concert music traditions.

In recent years, cultural groups and music lovers in Mysuru have taken several initiatives to preserve and promote his legacy.

It may be recalled that in 2017, a group of music enthusiasts, including Mysuru Yadupathy Putty, renovated Vasudevacharya’s heritage house located on New Sayyaji Rao Road in Mysuru.

Since the renovation, the venue has hosted several music programmes and performances dedicated to the composer-musician, helping younger generations connect with his work and contribution to Indian classical music.

Cultural heritage continues to inspire

Organisers said the official recognition of Vasudevacharya’s birth anniversary by the State government marks an important step in honouring Karnataka’s rich musical heritage.

Cultural experts believe such events play a vital role in preserving classical art forms and encouraging public appreciation for legendary composers who shaped South Indian music traditions.

The celebrations are expected to provide a platform for artistes and audiences to collectively remember and celebrate the enduring legacy of K Vasudevacharya in the field of Carnatic music.
