MYSURU: The Department of Kannada and Culture has proposed a ₹14.7 crore renovation for Kalamandir, the city’s premier cultural center. The request awaits approval in the state budget, set to be presented by CM Siddaramaiah on March 8.
Built four decades ago, Kalamandir now faces structural issues, including leaking roofs. It serves as a cultural hub, housing Rangayana, Kiru Rangamandir, and several other performance spaces, making its revamp a priority.
Following directives from CM Siddaramaiah and District Minister HC Mahadevappa, the proposal has been submitted through the Mysuru Deputy Commissioner. Planned upgrades include:
✅ Pipeline and drainage system overhaul
✅ Modernized air conditioning
✅ High-tech restrooms
✅ New auditorium seating
✅ Upgraded sound, lighting, and acoustics
✅ Renovation of the guesthouse, BV Karantha Ranga Chavadi, Sriranga Vedike, and Lankesh Gallery
Additionally, to reduce its ₹1.5 lakh monthly electricity bill, the department plans to install a 50-kilowatt solar plant. This initiative could cut 80% of energy costs and allow surplus power to be sold to the electricity grid, generating revenue.
Officials remain optimistic that the upcoming state budget will approve the funds, ensuring Kalamandir continues as a vibrant cultural landmark.
