Mysuru: Processions, cultural performances and commemorative programmes marked the celebration of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Jayanti across Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar districts on Thursday. The main event in Mysuru featured a colourful procession showcasing the rich heritage of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom and paying tribute to one of its most revered rulers.
Organised by Urs Mandali and various social organisations, the celebrations attracted large crowds and highlighted the enduring legacy of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, whose contributions to governance, education and social reform continue to be remembered across Karnataka.
Traditional procession recreates royal era
One of the highlights of the celebrations was a grand procession comprising decorated tongas, sarots and folk troupes that travelled through the city’s main roads.
The procession featured cultural performances by Kamsale and Veeragase artistes, while devotees chanted Harinama Smarane throughout the route. Decorated sarots displayed posters depicting the achievements and contributions of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.
A specially adorned chariot carrying a portrait of the Maharaja formed the centrepiece of the procession.
The procession commenced from Sri Jayachamarajendra School for Excellence and passed through Krishnaraja Boulevard, Vani Vilas Road, Madhavrao Circle and Sayyaji Rao Road before concluding at Krishnaraja Circle.
Residents gathered along the route and were seen paying their respects by folding their hands before the portrait of the Maharaja.
Floral tributes offered by royal family
Member of the erstwhile royal family, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, offered floral tributes to the portrait of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar before the commencement of the procession.
Several dignitaries, community leaders and members of the Arasu community participated in the event, reflecting the widespread admiration for the former ruler.
The celebrations also served as an opportunity to educate younger generations about the Maharaja’s contributions to the development of the Mysore state.
Yaduveer announces scholarship
Addressing the gathering, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, descendant of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Member of Parliament from Mysuru, said the ruler’s contributions continue to be remembered by people across the state.
He suggested that programmes commemorating Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar should be organised every month to keep his legacy alive.
On the occasion, Yaduveer announced a scholarship of ₹1 lakh for students of Urs Boarding School in the name of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.
The scholarship is expected to support deserving students and honour the Maharaja’s commitment to education and social upliftment.
Leaders highlight governance legacy
MLA T. S. Srivathsa praised Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar’s visionary leadership and progressive governance.
He said the Maharaja had introduced several reforms that were far ahead of his time, including measures related to social justice and the welfare of marginalised communities.
According to the MLA, many of the concepts currently discussed in governance and social policy had already been implemented during Nalwadi’s reign.
He described the former ruler as a symbol of good governance whose legacy continues to inspire policymakers and administrators.
Religious leaders and community representatives participate
The celebrations witnessed the participation of several seers and community leaders, including representatives of Malavalli Manteswamy Mutt and members of various Arasu organisations.
Among those present were M. L. Varchus Srikanta Siddalinga Raje Urs, Jnanananda Channaraje Urs, Varun Lingaraje Urs, B. P. Bharat Urs, Arasu Mandali President Srikantaraje Urs and Rama Seva Sangha’s Sundar Raje Urs.
Their participation underscored the cultural and historical significance of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in Karnataka’s social and political landscape.
Legacy continues to inspire
Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, often remembered as one of India’s most progressive rulers, played a pivotal role in transforming the erstwhile Mysore State through advancements in education, industry, public administration and social welfare.
The annual Jayanti celebrations continue to draw widespread participation, serving as a reminder of his lasting contributions to Karnataka’s development and heritage.
