Mysuru: Sigma Hospital in Mysuru honoured organ donors and transplant recipients at a special programme organised as part of World Organ Donors Day, recognising their life-changing contributions and highlighting the importance of organ donation.
Donors honoured for their selfless contribution
Chief Urologist and senior kidney transplant surgeon Dr K M Madappa and Hospital Managing Director S Gnanashankar felicitated the organ donors during the programme.
The event also celebrated Sigma Hospital’s contribution to kidney transplantation, with its specialist team having performed more than 100 kidney transplants in the past five years, recording a success rate of 95 per cent.
The transplant team is headed by Dr K M Madappa and includes Urologist and Transplant Surgeon Dr D N Somanna, Nephrologist Dr Aniketh Prabhakar and anaesthetists.
One donation can save several lives
Dr Aniketh Prabhakar highlighted the urgent need to encourage organ donation, pointing out that a single cadaver donation can potentially save up to eight lives.
The programme also drew attention to the continuing shortage of organs available for transplantation in India. More than 63,000 patients are currently waiting for kidney transplants, while around 20 people reportedly die every day because of the shortage.
The figures underlined the importance of greater awareness and stronger support for organ donation.
Call for wider awareness and access
The event emphasised that hospitals, the government and policymakers need to work together to encourage more people to understand and consider organ donation.
By bringing donors, recipients and medical professionals together, the programme highlighted how one decision can transform several lives and offer hope to patients waiting for life-saving transplants.
Sigma Hospital’s recognition of donors also served as a tribute to the families and individuals whose generosity has helped others receive a new chance at life.
