An intense uproar has emerged in Nanjangud taluk, where residents are voicing strong objections to an unauthorised liquor establishment functioning within the premises of a marriage convention centre. Although a signboard outside reads “pure vegetarian” under the name SRK Hotel, insiders reveal that alcohol is being unlawfully served behind the guise of a restaurant.
What’s sparked greater controversy is the placement of a Gautama Buddha statue right in front of the bar, which villagers deem deeply disrespectful and culturally offensive. Allegations have also surfaced that alcohol is being secretly channelled into the Kalyana Mantapa through a window that connects the two buildings.
A member of the Gram Panchayat and local organisers have lodged a written appeal with the Excise Department, insisting that the expired bar license be acted upon and the venue be immediately shut down. The establishment is situated near religious places, educational institutions, and residential zones, further raising community concerns.
Villagers from nearby areas—Badanavallu, Mahadev Nagar, Shinda Gudihundi, Veeregowdan Hundi, Veeradevanpur, and Kodi Narasipur—have begun staging protests, warning that the continued presence of the bar in such a sensitive locality could spark religious tensions. Citizens have clearly stated that if the authorities do not respond swiftly, they will escalate the movement into a larger public agitation.
Locals are demanding immediate action against the bar owner and a permanent closure of the premises to restore peace in the area.
