A 17-year-old NSS volunteer, Gajendra from Nagawala village in Mysuru taluk, tragically drowned in a lake on the outskirts of Chandre village, Pandavapura, while attending a college-organized NSS camp. Gajendra, a second-year PUC (Commerce) student from Vijaya College, joined friends for a bath after volunteering in the camp’s activities. Unaware of the lake’s depth, he dived in, failing to resurface. Friends and NSS Officer Chaluvegowda attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful. Fire and Emergency Services personnel retrieved his body after a 30-minute search.
Following the incident, Gajendra’s family confronted the College’s Administrative Board, NSS officers, and lecturers, criticizing their delay in reaching the hospital and their lack of communication. They demanded accountability and expressed anger at the delayed notification to his parents.
Seeking justice, the family has requested ₹25 lakh in compensation. College Director Sunitha Puttannaiah mentioned mobilizing funds from the NSS office, DDPI, and lecturers but assured discussions for additional compensation upon the Administrative Board’s return from a foreign tour.
No police complaint had been filed as of last night.
