Mysuru: The Forest Department has invited objections from the public regarding the proposed removal of 137 trees of various species at the BEML campus in Koorgalli of Mysuru taluk for the construction of a hospital building. Citizens have been given time until May 25, 5:30 pm, to submit their views or objections before any final decision is taken regarding the proposed tree clearance.
Trees identified for removal at BEML campus
According to officials, a total of 137 trees of different species have been identified for clearance at the proposed project site situated within the BEML campus under the Mysuru range of the Mysuru territorial division.
The trees earmarked for removal include 47 teak trees, 13 acacia trees, 10 mahogany trees and 50 wild tree species. In addition, nine Peltophorum trees, six silver trees and one tree each of orchid and Indian Beech (Honge) species have also been listed.
Officials stated that the proposed tree removal has been initiated to facilitate construction of a hospital building within the campus premises.
Forest department conducted site inspection
The proposed action follows an application submitted by the Assistant General Manager of BEML seeking permission for tree clearance.
Following the application, officials of the Forest Department carried out a spot inspection and prepared a detailed list of trees identified for removal.
The process involved conducting a spot mohajer, a field verification procedure used to assess and record the trees present at the site before processing requests for clearance.
Authorities stated that the exercise was undertaken to document the existing tree cover and ensure procedural compliance before further action is taken.
Public consultation process initiated
The Forest Department has invited objections from the public under provisions of the Karnataka Tree Protection Act, 1976, as amended in 2014.
As per Section 8(3)(VII) of the Act, authorities have initiated the public consultation process before proceeding further with the proposal.
Residents and concerned individuals can submit written objections by placing them in the designated box available at the office of the Range Forest Officer (RFO), Mysuru Range.
People can also send their objections to the Tree Officer, RFO Mysuru Range, Mysuru Territorial Division, Aranya Bhavan, Ashokapuram, Mysuru – 570028.
In addition, objections can also be submitted through email to the designated address provided by the department.
Environmental concerns likely to draw attention
Large-scale tree removal proposals often attract public attention because of concerns relating to environmental impact, urban greenery and biodiversity conservation.
Environmental groups and residents generally seek greater clarity on compensatory measures, plantation plans and the long-term ecological impact of such projects.
While the proposed hospital infrastructure could improve healthcare facilities in the area, the issue may also lead to discussions regarding balancing development needs with environmental protection.
Officials have stated that objections, if any, must be submitted before the deadline to be considered as part of the decision-making process.
