Kodagu: Motorsport legend Maletira Jagath Nanjappa passed away at the age of 68 on Sunday, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in Indian rallying.
The veteran from Kodagu was among the country’s most accomplished motorcycle rallyists, winning the Indian National Rally Riders Championship nine times in the motorbike section between 1986 and 1996.
A champion who made history on two wheels
Nanjappa’s early rallying career was closely associated with his wife, Anita Nanjappa, who served as his navigator. The couple became known for their determination and remarkable teamwork on some of the toughest rally routes.
One of their most memorable episodes came when they faced a flat rear tyre during a rally. Rather than give up, they completed a gruelling 70-kilometre stretch with Anita sitting on the motorcycle’s petrol tank to reduce the load on the rear of the bike.
The incident became a reflection of the grit and resilience that marked Nanjappa’s competitive career.
From motorcycle rallies to off-road challenges
After establishing his dominance in motorcycle rallying, Nanjappa moved into four-wheel and off-road events, continuing to compete at a high level.
His achievements extended well into the later years of his career. In 2018, partnering with co-driver Chetan Changappa, he won the demanding Rainforest Challenge India in Goa, adding another significant achievement to an already distinguished motorsport journey.
Last rites in Nalvathoklu
Nanjappa’s last rites will be held at his residence in Nalvathoklu village, Kodagu, tomorrow at 4 pm.
His passing marks the loss of a celebrated figure in Indian motorsport, remembered not only for his championship victories but also for the courage, endurance and passion he brought to rallying over several decades.
