Mysuru: A tense situation prevailed in Masanapura village near Chamarajanagar on Sunday after a youth allegedly desecrated a portrait of Dr B.R. Ambedkar installed along the village’s main road. The incident triggered public outrage, leading to protests and the deployment of additional police personnel to maintain law and order.
According to sources, the incident occurred at around 5 am when Chandru (19) allegedly desecrated the portrait of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, a revered social reformer and principal architect of the Indian Constitution. Residents who witnessed the act reportedly confronted the youth and tied him to an electricity pole before assaulting him.
As information about the incident spread across the village, tensions escalated and a large number of residents gathered at the spot. Police personnel rushed to the area and rescued the youth from the crowd before shifting him to safety.
Police intervene to prevent escalation
Authorities responded swiftly to the situation to prevent further disturbances. Senior police officers visited the village and assessed the law-and-order situation following the incident.
Police officials increased security arrangements in and around the village as a precautionary measure. Additional personnel were deployed to ensure peace and prevent any untoward incidents.
The youth was taken into police custody for questioning, and an investigation was initiated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged act.
Villagers stage protest

MLA appeals for peace
Among those who visited the village was A.R. Krishnamurthy, who held discussions with residents and appealed for peace. He, along with other leaders, urged villagers to cooperate with the authorities and allow the investigation to proceed through legal channels.
Following assurances from officials and public representatives, the protesters agreed to withdraw their agitation. However, police continued to maintain a strong presence in the village to prevent any further tensions.
Officials have stated that all aspects of the incident will be investigated and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
