Mysuru: Urban Development Minister and Mysuru district in-charge Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah has directed officials to conduct an accurate survey of crop losses caused by deficient rainfall in the district.
The Minister issued the direction while visiting drought-hit villages, including Kempanahalli in Hunsur taluk, on Friday to assess the impact of prolonged rainfall deficiency on agriculture.
Rain shortage hits agriculture
Yathindra Siddaramaiah said the prolonged deficit in rainfall has severely affected agricultural production across Karnataka. He stressed the need for an accurate assessment of crop damage to understand the extent of losses faced by farmers.
Hunsur taluk has been particularly affected, with tobacco cultivation spread across nearly 21,000 hectares. Of this, around 2,000 hectares of tobacco crops have failed to achieve the expected growth due to inadequate rainfall.
The crop losses have added to concerns among farmers who depend on timely rainfall for agricultural production and livelihoods.
Accurate assessment needed
During his visit, the Minister directed officials to conduct a detailed survey of the affected agricultural areas and record the losses accurately.
The assessment is expected to provide a clearer picture of the impact of rainfall deficiency on farmers in Hunsur and other drought-hit parts of Mysuru district.
The visit also highlighted the continuing challenges faced by agricultural communities as rainfall shortages affect crop growth and production.
With thousands of hectares under cultivation in Hunsur taluk, an accurate assessment of the damage will be crucial in determining the extent of the impact on the farming community.
