Nepali student’s death causes tension between two countries
A Nepali student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar tragically ended her life, allegedly due to a troubled relationship with a fellow student. The incident triggered protests by Nepali students, both online and on campus, with support from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). As tensions escalated, a video of university staff making controversial remarks went viral, deepening the crisis.
In the video, Professor Manjusha Pandey and staff member Jayanti Nath made comments comparing the university’s expenses to Nepal’s national budget, sparking outrage. In response, KIIT suspended both individuals and issued an official apology, distancing itself from their statements. The university reassured Nepali students of their safety and urged them to resume classes.
Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police arrested 21-year-old Advik Srivastava from Lucknow, citing evidence of harassment that may have led to 20-year-old Prakriti Lamsal’s suicide. Authorities have seized her personal belongings for forensic examination.
Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli acknowledged the tragedy, expressing concerns over reports of Nepali students being forced out of hostels. Nepal’s Embassy in New Delhi has deployed officials to provide assistance and ensure student safety.
This incident has not only raised questions about student welfare but also strained Indo-Nepal relations, with diplomatic channels now engaged in addressing concerns.
