Nine Feet King Cobra Rescued from Home in Udupi
In a dramatic turn of events reminiscent of Nissim Ezekiel’s poem “Night of the Scorpion,” a King Cobra, nearly nine feet long, was found slithering into a home in Someshwara village, Udupi district, amid heavy rains. Unlike Ezekiel’s scorpion, which stung his mother, this venomous snake was successfully rescued by Ajay Giri, field director of the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS).
On Thursday, the Cobra was discovered coiled inside a box in the bedroom of a house. A family member noticed the snake’s tail peeking out and immediately contacted ARRS, located about 10 km away. Giri and his team arrived to find the King Cobra resting inside the box. The rescue operation was captured on video and went viral on social media.
Giri speculated that the Cobra entered the house through a tree branch extending to a window, seeking refuge from the rain. After being safely captured, the snake was released into the Agumbe forest.
