‘Mental health significant to each and every individual’

Mangaluru: Thank You Karnataka is a series of programmes organised to celebrate decennial year of News Karnataka and thus thank Kannadigas all over the globe for supporting the Spearhead Media Group to achieve this milestone.

One of the programmes under Thank You Karnataka series is Walk the Special Path, a show promoting sensitivity, awareness and most importantly, social inclusion of disabled children, which is aired on Monday.

The Guest of the tenth episode held on Monday January 10th was Dr. Meena Pereira, Dean an Associate Professor Post Graduate Departmenr of Social Worker, School of Social Work Roshini Nilaya. The anchor person for the programme is Meena Noronha.

The programme was premiered on NewsKarnataka.com’s YouTube Channel.

Dr. Meena Pereira said, “Mental health is significant to each and every individual, not just special children. It is the link between children and parents.” She said that there is a need for the change in the mindset of the people. “When it is only mother who is looking after the special child she will go through a lot of emotional pressure. Sharing responsibility and being a positive society, contribution to the well being of mental health can be given,” she stressed.

The doctor also discussed on the challenges faced by the parents of the special children in Indian society and the way forward to solve these issues.

“Acceptance, Allowance and Inclusiveness together can help in the better upbringing of the special child along respecting the mental health of the parents,” opined Dr. Meena Pereira.

As an advice to the audience doctor said, “Special children are not burden. Accept them as they are and seek support when required. Don’t be hesitant of having a special child, think that it is a blessing and be positive.”
