Two people were killed in a horrific accident on the outskirts of Raichur on Monday when a lorry ran over them near the Yarmarus bypass. The victims, identified as Ramesh (36) and his father Nagappa (58), died on the spot after the vehicle veered off the road and hit them with tremendous force.
Fatal crash on Raichur-Hyderabad Highway
According to reports, the father-son duo had stopped by the roadside when the incident took place. Nagappa was engaged in a phone conversation while Ramesh stood beside him. The approaching lorry suddenly swerved out of its lane and struck them, resulting in a devastating impact.
The collision was so severe that the victims’ bodies were left badly mutilated. Police officers rushed to the scene and initiated preliminary procedures, including registering a case and coordinating the transport of the bodies to the hospital for post-mortem examination.
The accident has renewed concerns regarding high-speed driving, inadequate road discipline and the vulnerability of pedestrians along national highways, particularly on bypass stretches where vehicles often accelerate.
Separate accident near Seetanagar Camp
In a second incident on the same day, two individuals were seriously injured when a motorcycle and a lorry collided near Seetanagar Camp in Raichur. The injured, Ayyanna and Amaresh of Hosuru village, were returning to Raichur from Sirwar after attending a wedding.
The lorry, reportedly carrying a load of glass, overturned after the collision. The impact caused the glass to spill across the road, creating hazardous conditions for other motorists. The injured bike riders were immediately shifted to RIMS Hospital for treatment.
The overturned vehicle led to a temporary traffic jam on the route, with authorities diverting vehicles through nearby fields to clear congestion and facilitate emergency response. Police have registered a case and begun an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, including whether excessive speed, mechanical failure or driver negligence played a role.
Rising road safety concerns
The back-to-back accidents have highlighted persistent road safety challenges in Raichur district. National and state highways in the region continue to witness high accident rates, often attributed to speeding lorries, insufficient enforcement, lack of surveillance and risky pedestrian movement near busy routes.
Local residents have urged authorities to enhance monitoring on accident-prone stretches, install additional warning signs and improve roadside infrastructure to reduce such incidents.
Police investigation underway
The Raichur police have assured thorough investigations into both accidents. Officers are expected to review CCTV footage, examine vehicle conditions and record witness statements to establish the circumstances surrounding each incident.
Authorities have urged motorists to remain cautious, particularly during night travel and on highway stretches where over-speeding is common. Efforts to enhance patrols and deploy more highway safety measures are expected in the coming weeks.
