A Bengaluru professional’s candid post about paying ₹45,000 a month for a one-bedroom apartment in HSR Layout has sparked fresh debate about the city’s rising rental costs and whether living in premium neighbourhoods is worth the expense.

The employee, who shared his experience on workplace community platform Grapevine under the username ‘MilkyClick’, said he recently decided to move out of HSR Layout after concluding that the financial burden outweighed the benefits.

“Paying ₹45,000 for a 1BHK is madness”

In his post, the resident described feeling relieved after making the decision to relocate.

“Goodbye HSR Layout! Paying ₹45,000 rent for a 1BHK is absolute madness,” he wrote, adding that moving out felt like a “massive weight lifted off” his shoulders.

He explained that he had initially chosen HSR Layout because it was a popular choice among professionals. However, over time, he began questioning whether the high rent was justified.

A visit that changed his perspective

The turning point came when a colleague invited him to visit a residential community in Brookefield.

After exploring several apartments there, he realised that larger and better-equipped homes were available at comparable or lower prices than what he was paying in HSR Layout.

The experience prompted him to reassess his priorities and look beyond neighbourhood trends when choosing a place to live.

Social media users share mixed views

The post quickly drew reactions from other Bengaluru residents. While some agreed that rental prices in popular localities had become unreasonable, others argued that living closer to workplaces could still save valuable commuting time and improve quality of life.

Several users shared similar experiences of moving to less expensive neighbourhoods and finding larger homes with better amenities.

The discussion reflects a growing concern among professionals as Bengaluru’s rental market continues to evolve, with many weighing the trade-off between convenience, lifestyle and affordability.
