New Delhi: Former India batter Mohammed Kaif has thrown his support behind Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, saying their experience will be crucial if India are to mount a strong challenge at the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. Kaif’s remarks come amid growing speculation over the future of the two senior cricketers, with reports suggesting that India could begin transitioning to a younger squad ahead of the tournament.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed speculation that the ongoing ODI series against England would be Rohit Sharma’s final assignment for the national team.
Debate over veterans’ future
Discussion surrounding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s place in India’s ODI plans has intensified following reports that selectors could gradually phase out senior players as part of preparations for the next World Cup.
Responding to the speculation, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that reports suggesting the England series would mark Rohit’s final appearance for India were unfounded.
The clarification has eased concerns among fans while keeping the focus on India’s long-term planning ahead of the 2027 tournament.
Kaif stresses value of experience
Speaking during a discussion on Cricbuzz, Kaif said India cannot afford to overlook the vast experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, particularly with the next ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in South Africa, where conditions are expected to be significantly different from those in the Indian subcontinent.
“The 2027 phase will be very important. People are talking about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma because it won’t be an easy World Cup. The conditions will be different, there will be bouncy pitches, and India will need both these players there,” Kaif said.
He added that the duo should continue playing regularly over the next few years to maintain their form and match fitness.
“We would definitely want them to play as many matches as possible from now on and remain in good form,” he said.
Compares duo to Lionel Messi
Kaif drew a comparison between the Indian batting stalwarts and Argentina football legend Lionel Messi, highlighting the influence experienced athletes can have in major tournaments.
Referring to Messi’s contribution to Argentina’s FIFA World Cup campaign, Kaif said that while experienced players may not always dominate the scoresheet, their leadership and game awareness often prove invaluable.
“Lionel Messi is 39 years old and his team has reached the FIFA World Cup final. He didn’t score in the semifinal but provided an assist. That’s what experience brings. When you have younger players who can finish the job, experienced players know how to guide them and create opportunities,” he said.
According to Kaif, Rohit and Kohli can play a similar mentoring role for India’s younger cricketers while continuing to contribute with the bat.
Important role under Shubman Gill
Kaif also expressed confidence that the experienced duo would remain key figures in India’s ODI setup under the leadership of Shubman Gill, who is expected to guide the next generation of players.
He said South African conditions would demand composure, technical ability and experience, qualities that Rohit and Kohli have demonstrated consistently throughout their careers.
“Whether it’s football or cricket, experience plays a huge role. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are considered among the greatest ODI players, so India will 100 per cent need them, especially under captain Shubman Gill in South African conditions,” Kaif added.
Selection likely to depend on form
While Kaif strongly backed the inclusion of the senior players, India’s selection for the 2027 World Cup is expected to depend on several factors, including fitness, form and team balance.
The selectors are also expected to continue building a strong pool of young talent while ensuring that experienced players remain available to guide the side in high-pressure tournaments.
With more than a year of international cricket still to be played before the World Cup, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will have further opportunities to strengthen their case for selection.
Kaif’s remarks add to the ongoing debate over balancing youth and experience, with many former cricketers believing India’s senior stars still have an important role to play in the team’s pursuit of another ODI World Cup title.
