Innovative Traffic Management Solution Developed By Nmit Students

In response to Bengaluru’s persistent traffic congestion issues, a team of 40 students from Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT) has developed a groundbreaking software solution. Partnering with industry leader Dassault Systemes, the students have created a sophisticated system aimed at easing traffic on high-density corridors within the city.

The initiative was born out of a collaboration that began in November 2023, leveraging Dassault Systemes’ platform to integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The software harnesses real-time data obtained from a fleet of drones equipped with high-definition cameras. These drones operate in swarms over the city, capturing comprehensive footage of traffic flow and identifying congestion hotspots.

Prahalad N Tengli, former director of Aero Systems at DRDO and professor of aeronautical engineering at NMIT, spearheaded the project as the principal investigator. He emphasized the system’s capability to provide instantaneous updates to traffic police, enabling prompt interventions to alleviate congestion. “Using inputs from these drones, which continuously monitor traffic conditions, we can pinpoint exact locations where congestion occurs. This information is relayed to the control room in real-time, allowing authorities to take immediate action,” explained Tengli.

Beyond traffic management, the drones also serve dual purposes by identifying vehicle number plates for enforcement of traffic regulations. This includes detecting violations that might go unnoticed by conventional surveillance cameras due to their positioning at traffic signals. “The drones not only identify traffic bottlenecks but also assist in issuing challans for traffic violations, thereby enhancing compliance and road safety,” Tengli added.
